How to Choose Aquarium Size

Bigger is almost always better. Here is why tank size matters more than you think.

Small tanks (under 40L) have rapidly fluctuating water parameters, are harder to heat stably, and severely limit your fish choices. A 60-100L tank is a far better starting point. Larger tanks have more stable chemistry, accommodate more interesting livestock combinations, and are actually easier to maintain. Consider fish at adult size – not at purchase size. Many fish sold as small juveniles grow to 15-30cm or more. A Plecostomus sold as a 5cm juvenile can reach 60cm. A Flowerhorn sold in a small bag can need a 200L tank as an adult. Research adult size before purchasing every single time. Related fish: Bristlenose Pleco (manageable size) vs Plecostomus (grows to 60cm).
